Brant County has plans to celebrate the Platinum Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II.
A one-day event at Mt. Pleasant Nature Park on June 4 will include children’s crafts and activities from 10 am to 12 pm It will also include a Storybook Walk celebrating local figures, Indigenous communities and include nature and historical content sponsored by the County of Brant Public Library.
The county, in partnership with the Mt. Pleasant Optimist Club, will plant a small memorial garden at the park that will include tobacco seeds to symbolize the enduring relationship between Indigenous communities and the Crown.
The garden will be planted in the spring and unveiled June 4.
County staff are also working on a plaque to commemorate the celebration at the park.
The plans were presented to county councilors at an administration and operations committee meeting on Tuesday and were recommended for approval by county councilors. Pending approval by county council on April 26, county officials say they will invite Lt. Gov. Elizabeth Dowdeswell to attend the celebration.
A series of events are taking place throughout Canada this year to honor The Queen’s service and dedication to the country and celebrate Canadian achievements of the last seven decades.
Queen Elizabeth II is Canada’s longest reigning Sovereign and the first to celebrate a platinum jubilee.
