Canada Day may be a few weeks away, but the Port Dover Lions have plans underway for a day filled with activities.
“Port Dover’s Canada Day celebrations are Norfolk County’s only all-day event and the area’s only sanctioned fireworks display,” said marketing and communications manager Alan Strang. “Canada Day festivities are traditionally a huge draw of visitors to town.”
A Kinsmen Soap Box Derby is to be held on Main Street, in front of The Arbor at 9 am followed by a parade of boats in the harbor at 11 am
A dog contest is planned for 11:15 am at Powell Park, and a callithumpian parade that has been a tradition in Port Dover since 1867 will kick off at 2 p.m.
The festivities conclude at Lions Silver Lake Park, located at 320 St. Patrick St., with a concert featuring Pipe Down at 7 pm and fireworks at dusk.
Canada Day buttons will be sold in stores throughout the town starting June 1 to help offset some of the costs of putting on the festivities.
The Port Dover Lions – organizers of the town’s Canada Day festivities since 1954 — are also seeking community and corporate sponsorships for parade bands, the concert, and fireworks. Interested parties are asked to contact [email protected].
