Council narrowly votes to repeal temporary clear cutting bylaw

Chatham-Kent councilors narrowly voted to repeal the temporary clear-cutting bylaw on Monday night.

East Kent Coun. Steve Pinsonneault entered the motion, believing it was time to move on from the issue.

Council passed his motion 9-8, with numerous deputations from the public taking place earlier in the evening.

The committee of the whole that had been tasked with coming up with a solution to improve Chatham-Kent’s tree cover was paused last year due to the municipal election.

Those meetings presentations featured on such topics as the latest tree cover statistics, watershed natural heritage mapping, planning regulations and Chatham-Kent’s official plan, and also reviewed the community engagement to date.

Wallaceburg Coun. Aaron Hall, who chairs the committee, originally planned to enter a separate motion Monday that asked for a work plan moving forward, while keeping the temporary bylaw in place.

However, he withdrew the motion after Pinsonneault’s successful motion.
