Autosuggestion method invented by the pharmacist Émile Coué in the 1920s, it generally consists of repeating positive sentences according to our current problem. Several coaches recommend this method like Luc Teyssier d’Orfeuil.
Definition: what is the Coué Method?
The Coué method consists of self-control through conscious and positive autosuggestion. Autosuggestion meaning “to implant an idea in oneself by oneself“. There are three ways to approach autosuggestion according to Luc Teyssier d’Orfeuil, coach specializing in the Coué method:
- The repetition of sentences : repeating positive sentences to oneself according to one’s objective;
- Visualization : imagining that his objective is achieved (for example, imagining himself succeeding in his presentation at work) as do top athletes;
- Autosuggestion by the body : stand straight instead of having a hunched position or take the position of wonderwoman, hands on the hips to give yourself strength.
Who invented the Coué Method?
Emile Coue is the origin of the method that bears his name. This french pharmacist born February 26, 1857 in Troyes and died July 2, 1926 in Nancy is one of the precursors of the behavioral psychology and positive thinkingand one placebo effect experimenter. He will publish Self-control through conscious autosuggestion in 1922.
What are its benefits ?
“The Coué method has benefits on every aspect of daily life, within reason, whether for have more energy if you are sick, to sleep better, but also for have more self-confidence at work, when speaking in public or to mobilize teams…” says Luc Teyssier d’Orfeuil.
Examples of positive sentences to say to each other
The best-known phrase, which Émile Coué advised repeating twenty times in the morning and twenty times in the evening, is: “Everyday, in every way, I’m getting better and better.” But it is possible to repeat sentences adapted to his problem at the time. If it concerns sleep or the stress of a presentation, it is advisable to say “I’m going to sleep tonight a restful sleep, until 7 o’clock in the morning” or “I will, at Monday’s meeting, speak loudly and slowly while looking people in the eye“. To build an effective sentence, it must be formulated in the near future, be positive and detailed. So you don’t have to say “jI’m not going to have insomnia “or simply formulate”I am going to sleep”.
“The Coué method can be used for every day-to-day problem because, if the will does not help, the imagination, on the other hand, can help to overcome its difficulties. Thus, I visualize that my conference will go well or that I will get better“, explains Luc Teyssier d’Orfeuil.
Is the Coué Method reliable?
“In France, the Coué method tends to be mocked.” Scientific studies are rare about this method.
