In France, the government is now urging the population to put on mouth guards again in all public places. It is the Omikron variants BA.4 and BA.5 that cause the spread of infection to rush in the middle of summer. In the last seven days, 880,000 new cases have been confirmed in the country, compared with 160,000 cases in the first week of June. Infection is also increasing in many other European countries. Italy had just over 600,000 confirmed new cases in the past week, and Germany almost as many. The increase is also large in Spain and Greece.
