The levels of coronavirus in the wastewater in Gothenburg are increasing and are now higher than they were during the first pandemic peaks, reports Sveriges Radio. This is shown by a recent measurement carried out at Sahlgrenska Academy.
– There are more people in society now who are infected, says Helene Norder, microbiologist at Sahlgrenska University Hospital, to the radio.
However, the levels are lower than they were during the omicron peak last winter.
The increase started about two weeks ago. Norder fears that this could mean that more people than previously thought will need hospital care, even though the new virus variant BA.5 is milder than previous variants.
– This is why we always leave our results to the hospital management, infection control and others so that they are prepared if that should happen, says Helene Norder to SR.
