Cordwood: what is it?

Cordwood what is it

the drink cordé is a construction technique based on logs imported from Canada. Its name comes from the “chord”, an ancient unit of measurement for firewood.

The walls are mounted row by row by assembling the logs using a mortar composed of limeof sand and sawdust. You can use various species of wood, provided it is well seasoned. The logs are arranged transversely on the surface of the wall, as for a stere, so that only their end cuts and mortar joints are visible on both sides. Their length, 35-40 cm, determines the thickness of the wall. We play on the differences in shape and size to give rhythm to the decor. The set offers, on both sides, a rustic look that leaves plenty of room for creativity. Everyone is free to integrate materials other than wood (glass bottles, solid or hollow bricks, stones, etc.) according to their whim.

An ecological solution, economical to implement

Corded wood has little impact on the environment. The technique is easily acquired and its components are very inexpensive, starting with the logs. The corded wood walls do not require any particular finishing, except the smoothing of the mortar surface. Their natural microporosity promotes moisture transfer. Hygro-regulating and insulating at the same time, the construction brings freshness in summer and thermal comfort in winter. However, it is necessary to think carefully about how to embed in the walls the electricity networks and plumbing. We can always put them in apparent, but it is less aesthetic.
