COP16 ended early – delegates went home

Decisions were made on issues such as biological diversity and the profit from digital genetic information, but several issues remained on the negotiating table.

In the end, the meeting had to be canceled when there were not enough people left to negotiate the issues. They had gone home instead.

– We do not have a budget that allows us to rebook flights. There were ten of us here from the beginning, now only I am left, said one of Fiji’s delegates, standing up, reports DN.

Should have finished last Friday

The summit began on 21 October and the planning stated Friday 1 November as the final day. The negotiations dragged on and the final decision-making meeting could not reach the finish line.

Now the question of funding hangs in the air, as a decision was never made there.

The plan: The world agrees on a solution to the mass extinction

According to the UN, one million of the planet’s total of eight million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction because of humans. At the UN meeting in Colombia, the idea was that the world should agree on concrete solutions to stop the mass extinction, including by protecting 30 percent of the earth’s surface by the year 2030.

But the conflict-ridden world politics had a tendency to get in the way sometimes. Climate Minister Romina Pourmokhtari told SVT during the meeting that behind closed doors, Russia is “crossing its arms”
