A man who was detained with restrictions before his trial, ie almost completely isolated from the outside world, remained in custody under these conditions for ten days after he was convicted, reports P4 Gothenburg.

The verdict should not have entered the prison system.

– When you are in prison, you have a different life, you are in fact deprived of your liberty in prison, but when you have full restrictions, it means that you are in principle completely isolated from the outside world, says Sebastian Wejedal, senior lecturer in procedural law at University of Gothenburg, to the radio.

The Ombudsman has initiated an investigation against the Swedish Prison and Probation Service after the incident.

– Sweden has been criticized in many international contexts for how we use the detention system and for how we use restrictions. When you use complete isolation, it is similar to torture. It is incredibly destructive, says Sebastian Wejedal.

The prison in Gothenburg regrets what has happened and says that the case fell between the chairs in several stages due to the human factor.
