Convicted of murder acquitted for shooting at Berga in Helsingborg

In May 2023, two people were shot in a business premises on Berga in Helsingborg. One of them was hit with two shots – one straight through the torso and one in the arm. The other person was shot in the calf, but both survived.

In August last year, the brother of one of the victims was shot dead in Dalhem and four people have been convicted of involvement in the murder. Two of them are known criminals from northwestern Scania and they received long prison sentences. One of them, a 26-year-old man, is judged to be the one who ordered the murder and he was therefore given a life sentence.

The day after the verdict, the man sentenced to life, despite his denial, was also charged with the attempted murder at Berga. Another man charged with aiding and abetting attempted murder.

Pictures of motorcyclists as evidence

The prosecutor’s evidence included surveillance images showing a man dressed in black on a motorcycle in the Berga industrial area and at the address where the attempted murder occurred. The motorcycle was found about an hour after the attempted murder in a garage that can be linked to the man who is suspected of being an accomplice.

– We believe that it is the 26-year-old who is the shooter and the motorcycle driver, and DNA traces from him have been found on the motorcycle and the helmet, says Christofer Linder, one of the prosecutors in the case.

DNA traces from at least three other people have also been found on the motorcycle.

Now the verdict of the Helsingborg district court has come – both men are cleared of the suspicions.

– We have always said that the suspicion is based on weak circumstantial evidence, and the court has confirmed that. My main man has always said that he has nothing to do with this, says Jakob Sjödin, lawyer for the man charged with aiding and abetting attempted murder.

Evidence not strong enough

The Helsingborg district court considers that it has been proven that it is the motorcycle in question that the shooter used, but it is not possible to say for sure that it is the 26-year-old man who is the driver and the shooter.

A cigarette butt with the 26-year-old’s DNA has also been found near the crime scene, but since he usually stays in the area, it is also not considered strong enough evidence.

SVT is also looking for the 26-year-old’s lawyer.
