The panel discussion during the Culture Night was to be about today’s social debate, racism and cultural debates starting in “Tintin-gate”. Barakat Ghebrehawariat was invited as an experienced debater and writer on the subject.
In connection with questions from the audience, the N-word was uttered and guards were called.
Strong reactions on social media
Now he is criticizing the organizer in a post on social media. The post has provoked strong reactions.
– I feel sad and disappointed, but I must point out that this is not the first time. I think it has gone too far and open racist expressions are occurring more and more often.
Kulturhuset apologizes
The head of culture has apologized and they are now investigating the incident.
– If I had been in the room myself, I would have asked not to use those kinds of words. Obviously, we could have done something differently, says Linda Beijer, cultural director of Kulturhuset Stadsteatern.
– But we don’t want more excuses, we want change, says Barakat Ghebrehawariat.
Counter debater: Nothing to apologize for
The author and journalist Ola Wong was also on stage during the conversation. He speaks up The Express that he does not think the Kulturhuset has anything to apologize for.
– I think that if you enter into a debate about old cultural debates that deal with that particular word, it’s strange if you can’t handle it, he tells the newspaper.
