Kenneth Branagh’s “Glossy Trash” series returns with a horror twist
A Haunting in Venice is based on Christie’s novel Hallowe’en Party. Celebrated detective Hercule Poirot (Branagh) has retired in Venice. He reluctantly accepts an invitation to a séance, where he is confronted with his very own ghosts. And of course, how could it be otherwise with a surprising death.
As the trailer already shows, Branagh’s film series is leaning with A Haunting in Venice a bit in the direction of horror staging. Whether that really adds new elements to the film series remains to be seen. While some fans celebrate the series for its loyalty to the original, others see it as entertaining but ultimately awkward glossy trash.
