It is clear since the parties in the education committee have decided where they stand on the government’s bill An equal school choice. It contains proposals to make children’s and parents’ choice of school more fair and equal, and, according to the government, proposals that can reduce school segregation and give all children a chance at education on equal terms.
Go against
But a majority in the committee with the Moderates, Christian Democrats, Liberals, Center Party and Sweden Democrats oppose the vast majority of proposals. Only those who apply to selection for resource schools will find grace, where needs should weigh heaviest when the schools give students space.
On the other hand, the majority say no to independent schools not being allowed to have queuing time as a choice for children who want a place. It would restrict the free choice of school, the bourgeois and SD believe.
The government has justified its proposal by saying that queuing time, on the contrary, limits children’s and parents’ opportunities to choose a school. Instead, queuing time benefits families where the parents put children in line already at BB and reduces the opportunities for children whose parents are not so foresighted or who move to a new city or area where the places are already packed.
Too vague
The majority also believes that the government’s proposal that schools and principals should work for a comprehensive social composition is too vague and reduces freedom of choice.
The committee urges the government to return with a new proposal on selection criteria for school choice and makes it clear that queuing time must be included.
