Continued problems in the Christmas traffic

Christmas traffic continues to cause slippery roads in southern Sweden. Along parts of the west coast there is a risk of flooded roads and strong winds, so strong that the Swedish Transport Administration has chosen to close certain train lines.
– Keep an eye on the warnings on SMHI’s website, says TV4 meteorologist Caroline Andersson.

The mild weather in the southern parts of the country risks creating traffic problems even during Christmas Day. SMHI warns during the morning until the afternoon of sudden ice slippage in northern Götaland and parts of southern Svealand.

– Precipitation in the form of rain or snow ends up on cooled road surfaces and then ice forms at once, explains TV4’s meteorologist.

The problems may also creep further south as the temperature drops below zero.

– There will also be some rain and sleet during the day. If the roads are still wet, it may freeze during the afternoon and evening, and it may be worth keeping an eye on, says Sofia Söderberg.

In Götaland it will also be quite windy. Along the west coast and down over parts of Skåne there is a risk of storm surges.

Trains are cancelled

The storm caused the Swedish Transport Administration to decide to withdraw several train lines in the area. The routes Varberg-Borås, Eslöv–Helsingborg, Halmstad–Värnamo, Kalmar–Linköping and Ystad–Simrishamn are expected to start running again late on Christmas Eve or first on Boxing Day.

SMHI has also issued an orange warning for high water levels along parts of the west coast, where there is a risk of flooding.

At 07:00 the water levels in both the Helsingborg area and in Halmstad are around 100 centimeters above normal.
