“We talked about the need to address Turkey’s concerns and move forward with Finland’s and Sweden’s applications for NATO membership,” writes Stoltenberg on Twitter.
Erdogan said Turkey’s objections were based on “legitimate and legitimate grounds”, according to the country’s presidential office.
Jens Stoltenberg also met with Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin. She has been visiting Washington since June 1, and has also met with Nancy Pelosi, Speaker of the US House of Representatives.
On the agenda for that meeting Russia’s attack on Ukraine, Finland’s application for NATO membership, the fight against climate change and gender equality issues.
Sanna Marin will also be present at a meeting with the Bilderberg Group in Washington. She will stay in the country until the beginning of next week.
The Bilderberg Group holds an annual conference with around a hundred leaders in, among other things, politics, finance and academia. About two-thirds of the participants come from Europe and the rest from North America.
According to the group itself, the conference is informal and lacks a detailed agenda, but some of the main points this year are “NATO’s challenges” and “Russia”. The meeting began on Thursday and will continue until Sunday. According to the group’s principles, participants may not reveal what others have said.
Sanna Marin will stay in the US until the beginning of next week.
