Continued lockdown in France – no government in place

The complicated talks about a new government in France continue.

The left roared and became the largest in the French parliamentary election at the beginning of July, but without its own majority. The four parties in the alliance jointly proposed Lucie Castets as their candidate for the post of prime minister.

Elections in France 2024

  • The French left alliance proposes a prime minister

  • Yaël Braun-Pivet re-elected as Speaker of France

  • The French president, Emmanuel Macron, for his part, announced that no new prime minister would be appointed before the Olympics. Earlier this week, the president also said no to the leftist coalition’s candidate.

    The political scientist: Requires creativity

But now the French are getting impatient.

The situation requires creativity and perhaps France should look towards other countries, says Samuel Hayat, political scientist Science PO, who SVT spoke to. He sees two options:

    – Either Macron appoints a government that backs him, but which he knows will not be able to govern because it prevents the left from gaining power. Or he allies himself quietly with the far right which becomes a support party, as in Sweden. Then the far right would at least agree not to bring down the government.

    Need a new budget

According to SVT’s European correspondent Ulrika Bergsten, an alternative for Macron is to break up the left-wing coalition – consisting of the left, the Social Democrats and the Greens.

    – Maybe he can get some of the centre-leaning politicians from the socialist parties or the Greens with him. Maybe he also needs to enlist some votes from the right, or at least agree to some sort of collaboration with the far right. In that case, it is historic.
