Another eight people have been arrested in Hong Kong for commemorating the anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre in Beijing on June 4. Among them Alexandra Wong, a 67-year-old woman who is seen as a prominent democracy activist, also known as “Grandma Wong”.

Wong reportedly held flowers in her outstretched hand as she was surrounded by authorities and led to a police car.

It is not yet known on what grounds the people were arrested, but since a new security law was introduced in 2020, it has been forbidden to commemorate the anniversary of the massacre.

On Saturday, four people were arrested for drawing attention to the massacre, according to the Hong Kong police, for “incitement” and “outrageous behavior”.

This year marks 34 years since the student-led protests in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square were violently put down. At least several hundred people were killed, according to some reports upwards of 3,000.
