Research conducted in the United Kingdom revealed that people who eat a handful of nuts every day can reduce the risk of all-cause dementia. Compared to people over the age of 60 who did not eat nuts, those who reported consuming up to 30 grams of nuts per day had a 16 percent lower risk of developing dementia in the coming years.
50 THOUSAND 300 ADULTS WERE EXAMINED IN THE 7-YEAR STUDY
Another study conducted in Spain led by Bruno Bizzozero-Peroni, Valentina Diaz-Goni and Nuria Beneit showed that consuming a handful of unsalted nuts every day reduces the likelihood of elderly and middle-aged people suffering from dementia. The study, which lasted about 7 years, examined 50,300 adults, most of whom were in their 50s.
While 1,400 cases of dementia were detected in the study, it was revealed that consuming nuts every day reduced the risk of dementia by 12 percent. This rate was 16 percent for those who preferred unsalted nuts. Participants were followed for an average of 7 years. Throughout the study, the all-cause dementia rate was 2.8 percent. Those who said they ate about a handful of nuts a day were less likely to fall into this risk category.
IT ALSO REDUCES THE RISK OF HEART DISEASE
Experts say that the positive effects of nuts on health are not limited to the brain. According to large-scale epidemiological studies, people who consume approximately 140 grams or more of nuts per week reduce their risk of heart disease by 35 percent to 50 percent. Dried nuts, which help control weight and solve digestive problems, also protect intestinal health with the high fiber content they contain.
