Journalists and publicists direct sharp criticism against the constitutional amendment on foreign espionage that the Riksdag is expected to vote through on Wednesday. With the new law, it becomes a crime to disclose information that could damage Sweden’s relationship with another country or international organization. The proposal, which has a majority in the Riksdag, was already voted through this spring, but since it is about amending the constitution, two votes are required and it is therefore expected to pass tomorrow.
The change in the law threatens democracy and freedom of expression and could in practice mean that future disclosures of Sweden’s international collaborations are stopped, say several people that TV4 Nyheterna spoke to.
– says journalist Fredrik Laurin, who has worked with investigative journalism for 20 years.
