Conservation authority watching Thames River may need to operate diversion

As February’s unpredictable weather continues this week, conservation authority officials are watching the conditions along the Thames River.

Wednesday’s freezing rain is expected to turn to snow. Forecasts are predicting at least 20 millimeters of rain for the duration of the system, with some forecasts calling for as much as 40 mm of total precipitation.

Temperatures are predicted to remain close to the freezing point into Thursday morning.

“Given the forecast of mixed precipitation and temperatures right around the freezing point for the next 24 hours, it is very difficult to predict the flooding potential. The 20 mm of rain predicted would be significant at this time of year if it was all rain,” Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority officials stated in a release Wednesday.

“Depending on the amount and timing, the freezing rain could help or worsen the flooding situation. With the possibility of even higher rainfall amounts, some amount of ponding and localized flooding should be expected.”

On smaller local waterways within the Lower Thames jurisdiction, levels should be expected to rise and some could spill their banks into adjacent low-lying areas, officials added.

If the higher rainfall amounts materialize, it’s possible that McGregor Creek in Chatham could rise high enough the conservation authority would have to operate the McGregor Creek diversion channel, which it is prepared to do if needed.

“Accumulating ice could block drainage outlets leading to further drainage problems,” officials added. “Residents should pay attention to local conditions and be prepared.

“It is too early at this time to predict what kind of impacts this event may have on Thames River water levels.”

People are urged to use caution and avoid the river, ditches and streams. With the freezing rain, conditions will be slippery. Children, pets and livestock should be kept away from the water.
