Connor McDavid won a total of four skill competitions.
Connor McDavid won the skills competition of the hockey NHL star match event. The Edmonton Oilers star forward accepted the million dollar prize for his victory.
The Oilers skipper won the fastest skater competition, the accuracy competition, the stick handling competition and the obstacle course.
There were 12 players in the skills competition.
– It was entertaining. There was a competitive spirit involved. Everyone worked hard so that we could organize a decent show, a happy McDavid summed up.
In addition to McDavid, participants in the skills competition were Leon Draisaitl (EDM), Nathan MacKinnon (COL), Cale Makar (COL), Quinn Hughes (VAN), Elias Pettersson (VAN), JT Miller (VAN), Nikita Kucherov (TBL), Mathew Barzal (NYI), David Pastrnak (BOS), Austin Matthews (TOR) and William Nylander (TOR).
Each player participated in four of the six sports in the first round. Five points were awarded for winning the event, four for second place, and so on. The sports were the fastest skater, hardest shot, stick handling, shots directly from the pass, passing and shot accuracy.
After the first round, Pastrnak, Draisaitl, Hughes and Kutsherov dropped out of the competition.
The eight best continued to the next round, where it was a tough competition. Each player who made it to the next round chose the goalkeeper they wanted to shoot a hard shot at. The goalkeepers were Jeremy Swayman (BOS), Aleksandar Georgiev (COL), Jake Oettinger (DAL), Sergei Bobrovsky (FLA), Cam Talbot (LAK), Igor Shestjorkin (NYR), Thatcher Demko (VAN) and Connor Hellebuyck (WPG).
The goalkeeper who made the most saves in the competition was Georgiev, who blocked nine attempts by McDavid and thus won the $100,000 prize. Nylander won the ranking competition.
After the qualifying race, MacKinnon and Pettersson dropped out of the competition. The top six went on to the final obstacle course round. In the last sport, all skills were measured and double points were awarded.
McDavid also won the obstacle course and was also crowned the winner of the entire skills competition. The Canadian collected a total of 25 points during the skills competition, second was Makar with 20 points and third was Matthews with 18 points.
Tonight, starting at 10 pm Finnish time, a tournament-style star match will be played. Team MacKinnon and Team McDavid and Team Hughes and Team Matthews will meet in the semifinals. The winners of the semi-finals will meet in the star match final. Sebastian Aho plays for Team MacKinnon, the team that starts the tournament.
