Today, January 23, Tomas Holmström turns 50.
How does it feel for the ice hockey legend?
– When you go to a restaurant, you have to take out your phone to light up the menu. That is probably the most annoying thing, says “Homer” to Piteå-Tidningen.
Tomas Holmström played over 1000 games in the NHL for the Detroit Red Wings between 1996 and 2013. During those years “Homer” managed to win four Stanley Cup titles, and with that he is part of the exclusive group of Swedes who have won four titles. In that quartet, apart from Holmström himself, is included Nicklas Lidström, Anders Kallur and Stefan Persson.
Highly praised
The career ended in January 2013. Today, 10 years later, Tomas Holmström turns 50. Despite the 50th anniversary, there have been many tributes elsewhere this winter as well. In early November, he was on hand at Little Caesars Arena when the Detroit Red Wings celebrated the 25th anniversary of their Stanley Cup heroes from 1997 and 1998.

Afterwards, Holmström was also present during the “Tidernas Hockeygala”, where he was celebrated together with the team that took home the Olympic gold in Turin in 2006.
– It’s big when you think about all the good teams that have passed through history. Then it became an emotional rollercoaster with Börje Salming and all that… But it was a really nice evening, says Tomas Holmström to Piteå-Tidningen.

“The most annoying thing”
Now the 50th anniversary celebration awaits, and in the future it will be invited to the occasional celebration.
– It will probably be a fairly ordinary Monday. I might take the day off from work, and then there will be a little open house and a party in the future.

And even though it feels good to turn 50, there are, after all, certain things that are nagging at Holmström.
– It feels great, even if you notice that your eyes are starting to hurt. For example, when you go to a restaurant and have to take out your phone to illuminate the menu. That’s probably what’s most annoying, but otherwise 50 is the new 40, it feels like, says Tomas Holmström.
