Rwanda’s ambassador is expelled from Congo-Kinshasa as Rwanda is accused of supporting the rebel group M23.

M23 has recently made progress in the eastern parts of Congo-Kinshasa and in response the UN peacekeeping mission has increased its level of readiness and support to the army.

M23 resumed fighting in late 2021 after being dormant for several years. Since then, the rebels have captured swathes of territory in North Kivu, including the key town of Bunagana on the Ugandan border.

The front line between Congolese troops and M23 rebels had been calm in recent weeks until last week, when clashes broke out again.

The group’s return has destabilized regional relations in central Africa, as Congo-Kinshasa accuses neighboring Rwanda of supporting the militia.

Rwanda denies the allegations.

However, a report by independent UN experts believes that the country’s government has given direct support to M23. And this week, a US representative told the UN that Rwandan defense forces are supporting M23.
