In June 2020, customs confiscated approximately 110 liters of strong beer, 18 liters of wine and spirits from a woman’s home in Trelleborg. In connection with that, she was suspected of smuggling. The investigation took two years, and in 2022 prosecutors lifted the seizure. Even so, the woman only got her alcohol back after another year, when the best before date for beer and wine had already passed.
Claimed damages
– You seized my wine and beer and now you have canceled the decision, but the wine and beer have become old. I am requesting damages of SEK 5,220, the woman writes in a letter to the Customs.
The Chancellor of Justice has now decided that no compensation would be paid to her because the beer and wine had passed their best before date before the seizure was lifted. Even so, the Chancellor of Justice admitted that it was a mistake that it took so long for the woman to get her alcohol back.
