Around Kalmar Castle there are several colonies of laughing gulls, and it is here that most of the dead birds have been found. According to the Norwegian Veterinary Institute (SVA), this is about 1,000 dead birds.
Since the alarm came, Kalmar municipality has picked up dead birds and sent them in for analysis. It is now clear that it is the highly pathogenic bird flu of the H5N1 type. The same virus has caused high mortality among seagull colonies in Stockholm County during April and May.
Continues to pick birds
According to Peter Arnesson, head of the service administration in Kalmar, the work of picking dead birds at the colonies continues. He says the picking shows that the number of dead birds is dropping every day.
– On Monday we picked about 150 birds, on Tuesday about 20, so things are going down, he tells SVT.
Kalmar municipality continues to monitor developments together with SVA. SVA also requests continued reports from the public.
