In the starting season of alpine skiing, Marcel Hirscher returns after a five-year break and represents his mother’s home country.
All-conquering in alpine skiing Marcel Hirscher returns to the World Cup after a five-year hiatus. Hirscher, who previously represented Austria, will now compete in the colors of his mother’s homeland, Holland. The Dutch sports federation announced the return of the star scorer on Tuesday.
He is scheduled to compete on Sunday in the giant slalom world cup race in Sölden, Austria. In his career, Hirscher has won, among other things, two Olympic gold medals, seven World Cup titles, 67 World Cup races and between 2012 and 2019 a record eight consecutive World Cup races.
The World Cup season continues after Sölden with slaloms in Levi.
Marcel Hirscher told about his retirement in the fall of 2019. He got married and became a father in 2018, and at the same time the motivation to continue a career in top sports had decreased.
His return will no longer come as a surprise. Already last spring, the Austrian media reported on Hirscher’s return intentions.
– Marcel told us a few days ago that he wants to return. The Austrian Ski Federation is in favor of changing Hirscher’s citizenship. He wants to compete in the colors of his mother’s home country, said the general secretary of the Austrian Ski Federation at the time Christian Scherer.
In the upcoming season, another fascinating comeback will be seen in the Alpine Skiing World Cup. Disputed with the Norwegian Ski Association Lucas Braathen previously shocked by ending his career at only 23 years old.
Braathen returns to the competitive slopes as a Brazilian national team athlete. Braathen’s mother is Brazilian.
Urheilu’s alpine skiing expert Marcus Sandell stated immediately after Braathen’s retirement that the Norwegian will return to the Games in the colors of Brazil.
– I laughed out loud then that it would be amazing to have a Brazilian alpine skier win the World Cup, Olympic gold and World Championship gold. That’s what he will do, a member of Urheilu’s expert guard Kalle Palander recalled.
