Conference seeks to empower girls

Olympic gold medallist Jocelyne Larocque will be a keynote speaker at the eighth annual Dream It * Be It virtual conference April 9 for area high school girls.

Larocque, who lives in Brantford, is a member of Canadian women’s hockey team that won gold at the Beijing Olympics.

Larocque, 33, made her Olympic debut at the 2014 Sochi Olympics, helping Canada capture its fourth consecutive women’s hockey gold medal. At PyeongChang Winter Games in 2018, she was named assistant captain and came home with a silver medal following a shootout loss to the US

She will be joined as keynote speaker by Fauzia Agbonhi, a slam poet and author.

The conference, organized by the Soroptimist International of Grand Erie, is for girls in Grades 9 to 12 in Brantford, Brant, Norfolk and Haldimand counties and Six Nations of the Grand River. The aim is to empower girls to pursue their career goals and reach their full potential.

The conference, which is from 10 am to 2:30 pm, also will feature career panel speakers with professional women from traditional and non-traditional vocations and various sessions covering topics such as creating achievable goals and putting dreams into action.
