(Finance) – One in two Italians, around 28 million people, recycles the gifts received at Christmas which are perhaps not very welcome. And there are those who even resell them online. The overall savings reach i 3.5 billion euros100 million more than last year and 200 more than pre-pandemic Christmas. AND
what emerges from a rresearch by the Confcooperative Study Center.“It’s an old habit – he explains Confcooperative – which has turned into a trend that has become increasingly consolidated in recent years. Despite theincrease in thirteenths which has been constant: 45.7 billion in 2022, 49 billion in 2024 and 51.3 this year.”
The gift recycling for Confcooperative it therefore becomes “an almost compulsive tendency where one is increasingly inclined to spend on oneself rather than on others”. Sometimes it is out of selfishness, other times out of necessity, in an Italy where the middle class is weakening and there are around 10 million Italians in poverty.
Recycling has different forms and methods, according to the study. Among the main ones we find that 6 out of 10 people will recycle the gifts they receive this holiday or that they keep throughout the year to use them at the appropriate time (52% women and 48% men). There are even those who earn money with it sale of the gift received on online platforms and on social networks: we are talking about 2 out of 10 recyclers (57% men, 43% women). The others will exchange the gifts received in the shops to transform them into vouchers to spend or to take other objects to give as gifts themselves (60% women, 40% men). Among recycled gifts we find in pole position i foodstuffs for 45% (starting from wines, sparkling wines, cured meats and cheeses). This is followed at 26% by scarves, gloves, hats, socks, leather goods, cosmetics and creams. 20% books and diaries, 9% toys.
