Whether it was for a first date, after-school treat, or a fun way to cool down in a heat wave, a south Chatham ice cream shop in south Chatham has been a popular stop for five decades.

The Cone and Shake Shop celebrated its 50th anniversary Tuesday, receiving official recognition from Mayor Darrin Canniff and the municipality’s economic development department.
Aidyn Lamb and partner Cait McCauley took over the shop on Queen Street, in front of Mike’s Place, in May.
“One of our first dates was here,” McCauley said, adding they jumped at the chance to buy the shop. “Everybody’s happy when they come to get ice cream. It’s a great way to brighten people’s day and be a part of that.”
The business had nine employees during the summer, but the plan to stay open until the end of October this season.
Lamb and McCauley, welders by trade, say they enjoy the creativity involved with putting together the menu.

“We’ve had a lot of fun coming up with new things, and desserts that we see online we think would do well,” he said. “It’s so fun. There’s infinite stuff you can do.”
New treats include a lemon-caramel crumb sundae and ice cream nachos.
Original owner Donna Buckler, who ran the business with her husband, Ken, into the 1980s, was on hand to show her support.
Noting she loved the experience during her time, she is happy to see the long-standing tradition continues.
“It feels great,” she said. “It’s nice to see it keeps going.”
