legionella
Legionella is a bacterium that can occur in water. People can become infected if they inhale small droplets containing the bacteria, for example near swimming pools, fountains or in the shower. Most people don’t get sick or get flu symptoms.
But the bacteria can also cause pneumonia or a high fever. The elderly and people in poor health, in particular, are more likely to develop severe pneumonia, which can also kill them.
You cannot get sick from drinking water that is contaminated with the legionella bacteria. The disease is also not contagious.
