Concerns about hot summer in Gaza: “Feels like sitting in a fireplace”

At the end of April, temperatures above 39 degrees were reached in places in Gaza. Something that has caused great suffering for people on the run.

According to the WHO, two children must have died because of the heat.

Although the high temperatures have since subsided somewhat, there is now great concern among Gazans and aid organizations about what lies ahead.

During the summer, for example, the average temperature in Rafah, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians have fled, is just over 30 degrees. On warmer days, it can be over 38 degrees, writes NPR.

Worry about diarrhea and Hepatitis A

The war has also affected Gaza’s service facilities. Something that has made it impossible to get rid of waste and wastewater in several places.

That, combined with rising temperatures, means that infectious diseases spread more easily.

Louise Wateridge, communications officer at Unrwa in Rafah, says that they are worried about both Hepatitis A and diarrhoea.

– There is nowhere to safely dispose of rubbish. People live under these pieces of plastic in a very unstable environment. It won’t get better, she tells him Bloomberg.
