Why study computer science? One of the most obvious reasons to studycomputer science is that it is omnipresent in all of our activities. Our life is associated with technology and we use it both for work and in our personal life. It is therefore a promising sector which is recruiting a lot. IT offers possibilities for creativity and innovation, by generating high-quality software solutions that can improve performance and be stronger against the competition. In addition, these are very well paid jobs that are becoming increasingly important in the world of work.
Finally, IT is transversal because it applies to all activity area. Companies are looking for specialized computer scientists who have a sense of contact. This means that they are technical professionals with good human relations.
What training courses exist in computer science?
There are many computer training courses and it is not always easy to find your way around. The offer is very wide and different establishments offer training courses ranging from a few months to several years.
Here are the different degrees to turn to for computer training:
- Higher Technician’s Certificate (BTS) in Computer Science, bac + 2;
- University Diploma in Technology (DUT) Computer Science, bac + 2;
- Bachelor in Computer Science, bac +3;
- Professional license mention computer professions, bac + 3;
- European Diploma of Higher Studies (DEES) computer science, bac + 3;
- Specialized master, bac +5;
- Diploma ofengineer, bac +5;
- Private school specializing in computer science, bac + 3 to bac + 5.
These different training courses lead to diplomas and can be carried out as initial training or work-study programs, depending on the terms of each structure. Finally, there are also computer training courses accessible without the bac. Among them, School 42 is the most famous. This private school is very selective, and trains thousands of students in development.
You can also learn computer science, alone from home, thanks to online courses, Mooc (Massive Open Online Course or, in French, open and massive online course) or distance learning. The advantage of these options is that there is no formal prerequisite to integrate them.
How to choose your computer training?
First of all, it is important to ask yourself which profession you want to go to. Each training has its specificities and does not prepare for the same positions. In addition, there are many sub-fields of IT to which certain courses will particularly direct their students. Among these sub-areas, we find in particular the development web, network management, support, maintenance, project management, cybersecurity, the big data, the’artificial intelligence or cloud computing.
Then, it is necessary to evaluate the duration of the studies necessary for the type of post concerned. If it is quite possible to become developer or technician after a short training, the positions of project managers, engineer and frame are only accessible after a bac + 5 level.
On the other hand, there are private and public establishments, which can intervene in the choice of training, according to the financing facilities of each student. Finally, some training courses are more selective than others, and you may have to fall back on less selective training in order to be able to integrate the course.
