Completely mobile-free schooling is being introduced at several schools

Since a year ago, it has been forbidden to use mobile phones for anything other than schoolwork in the classroom, but recently, the majority of schools around the country have started banning mobile phones throughout the school day, including breaks. One of these is the Wämöskolan in Karlskrona, where the students are allowed to hand in their cell phones in the morning and do not get them back until the end of the school day, something P4 Blekinge was the first to report on. Principal Martin Andersson believes that the mobile phones disturb the lessons.

“Doesn’t think it bothers”

However, the students at the school are anything but positive about the new ban.

– It feels hard not to have the phone, you are so used to always having it, says Ester Lennqvist in Efter fem.

Ester and her classmate Olivia Stenelund say that they still understand that the teachers believe that they are not respected, but they themselves have not noticed much of a difference since the ban was introduced.

– In the lessons they would still be handed in, but I don’t think it bothers, says Olivia Stenelund in Efter fem.

Many positives for a mobile phone ban

But overall, many are positive about a ban in school. After five did its own survey among viewers, via Instagram, where 80 percent are in favor and 20 percent are against a cell phone ban in school. Even Ester and Olivia see certain advantages despite the ban.

– You talk more with your friends, play cards and are more creative, says Olivia Stenelund.

More schools are joining

Wämöskolan is not alone in introducing a total ban. Even schools in Alingsås and Östersund, among others, have adopted the method and do not just point out that it has to do with disruptions in the lesson. Offensive photography and violations in social media still occur, and it is hoped that the ban will remedy this.
