The soil structure on the site turned out to be different from the initial investigations, says soil specialist Han de Rijk of the Utrecht Region Environmental Service: “We thought we found a layer of clay at a depth of 4-5 meters that could have stopped the pollution, but it wasn’t there. As a result, the pollution has been able to spread further via groundwater, sand and a layer of peat. As a result, we are quite surprised.”
