Community film will not feature paintball scenes and has a sad reason for doing so

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

What do you think of when you think of community? The wonderfully awful dynamic between the most dysfunctional study group in pop culture history? The million memes? Or the paintball tournaments that turned the grounds of the Greendale community college into a brightly colored battle zone?

Well, there’s bad news for fans of paintball action: The long-awaited community film will not show paint balling – and also forego another aspect loved by fans. The reasons for this are as tragic as they are understandable.

Series creator Dan Harmon finally reveals details about the community film – and could break the hearts of fans

In the community podcast “Six Seasons and a Podcast” Dan Harmon (also Rick and Morty) talked about what made the series so special. Including the fact that particularly popular episodes are often dedicated to a single topic and at the same time played with different genres. A concept that cannot be implemented in a feature film.

It’s a lot easier for me to rule things out than to reveal what we are thinking about. For example, we ask ourselves, ‘Do we really think it would be a good idea for the community film to be a paintball episode?’

The joy that the first paintball episode of the series would have elicited from fans is simply not possible anymore, according to Harmon. However, there is another reason why we don’t have Abed, Annie and Co down the halls of Greendale Community College with paintball guns will see running: the issue of gun violence in the USA and how often armed massacres occur in schools.

To show someone walking around a school with guns on TV, was never a good idea. Not even then. How should we do this in a way that is acceptable?

The Dungeons & Dragons theme also seems to be off the table for Dan Harmon. In the Episode “Fat Neil Strikes Back” the study group had role-played for an entire episode. One of many beloved moments from the show that just didn’t translate well into film, according to the showrunner:

Are we playing Dungeons & Dragons for 90 minutes? […] I have to rule that out for myself. A better writer than me might not have to.

In 2020, however, the episode made headlines for another reason: after blackfacing allegations Netflix removed the episode from streaming. Fellow player Ben Chang had painted his face black for his elf disguise and was subsequently confronted with it openly.

Dan Harmon’s statements sound as if he himself isn’t quite sure what the plot of the community film should look like – or just doesn’t want to reveal it yet. So far, however, it has been officially confirmed Return of the following actresses and actors:

It is unclear whether Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley Bessett) and Donald Glover (Troy Barnes) will also be there. Glover missed Community Season 6, but Harmon has said he’s interested. Chevy Chase aka Pierce Hawthorne left the show after internal disputes.

The script should in progress since November 2022 are located, there is currently no release date. The US streaming provider Peacock secured the broadcasting rights.
