A new law comes into force: From December 28, 2023, mobile phones must be able to be purchased without a charger if the consumer so wishes. Those who already have a charging cable should be able to use it for new devices.
Common charger and same type of connector
This will apply to all markets within the EU. The aim is that all mobile phones, tablets and cameras regardless of manufacturer can be charged with the same cable by the end of 2024. All devices that are sold must therefore have a USB-C connector.
The law applies mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones and headsets, handheld video game consoles and portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, earphones and laptops that are rechargeable by wired cable, with a power supply of up to 100 watts. These devices must now have a USB-C connector to be sold within the EU.
“Leave the current glut of chargers”
In a press release from the European Parliament, it can be read: “The common charger will finally become a reality in Europe. We have waited more than ten years for these rules, and we can finally leave the current abundance of chargers in the past.”
