Commercial vehicles, summer setback: -10.6% in the cumulative July-August

(Finance) – After 14 consecutive months of sustained growth, which had led the first half of the year to record a +17.7%, the commercial vehicle market in the month of July managed to stay in positive territory, albeit with a weak increase of 2.3%: 16,879 registrations compared to 16,499 in July 2023 (only 380 units more). August instead recorded a very sharp decline of 30.1%, with just 7,652 registrations3,289 fewer than the 10,941 of August 2023, and approximately 400 fewer registrations than in 2022. Overall, the two-month period July-August reports a decline of 10.6%, with 24,531 registrations.

There August setback reduces the growth rate of the first eight months of 2024 to 11.4%, with 136,500 units registered compared to 122,571 in the same period of 2023.

Three months after the opening of the Invitalia platform for booking new incentivesabout 60% of the 53 million allocated funds has been used, with 49% absorbed by pure electric vehicles (BEVs). However, the zero-emission vehicle market remains “blocked”, with a BEV share stuck at 1.7% in the first eight months of 2024, less than half compared to 3.7% in the same period of the previous year.

The President of UNRAE, Michael Criscihighlights “the positive trend in electric vehicle reservations which should have positive effects on registrations in the coming months, but not sufficient to achieve the European objective of a more incisive transition towards zero-emission vehicles”.

In this sense, UNRAE hopes that the amounts of the current Eco bonus and provide a structured plan for the next few years, also to accelerate the renewal of the park.

Crisci in fact underlines that “a greater usability of the funds would allow us to modernize the current presence of obsolete and potentially unsafe vehicles on our roads. Over 38% of the 4.460 million vehicles in circulation as of June 30 (according to UNRAE estimates) are older than 18 years and pre-Euro 4 standards”.

UNRAE, in order to speed up the development of the mobility electric through the diffusion of a widespread and efficient charging network, continues to underline the importance of incentivizing its strengthening through the introduction of a 50% tax credit for private investments in fast charging stations (over 70 kW) at least until 2025.
