The Malmporten project will make the port of Luleå Sweden’s second largest port in terms of tonnage. In order for the port to be able to receive larger ships, the fairway needs to be both deeper and wider.
– We will dredge material equivalent to 37 filled Globes from the waterways here, says Edin Maslesa, project manager at the Swedish Maritime Administration.
Magnor & Simpson
To do this, among other things, two of the world’s largest dredging plants, Magnor and Simpson, and also suction dredgers have been hired.
The dredging of the waterways is expected to continue until 2028. Then there will be work with new lighthouses, buoys and completion of the quay and infrastructure.
