Something is happening in the MMORPG New World (Steam). A major overhaul in combat and animations is set to go live from March 12th: It’s intended to ensure that combat feels good when there are many players fighting in one zone. There is also controller support. Fans on Reddit have already discovered an improvement.
What should change at New World?
Amazon is improving the combat system in busy zones
What’s happening with New World’s combat system? Amazon has missed a long technical blog post about what exactly is being changed “under the hood” (via Amazon):
400 actions have been manually converted in the new system to ensure that the gameplay remains the same, but is much smoother and can be changed more easily in the future.
The developers say: The original system worked well in development, but had performance issues as New World grew
The new “Slayer Script” project is now intended to ensure that the combat and animations now feel good even in areas where there are a lot of players.
“Combat is now less shaky and smoother”
Does that work? This is already live on the test server and players on reddit are actually saying: The combat feels “smoother” now:
“I’ve only had 200 hours in the game, but I’m messing around a bit on the test server. The combat just feels better overall. He appears less heavy and shaky. The action is much more predictable now.”
Many people agree with this, but there are also some dissenting voices, especially from PvP players. They counter that they are just angry because certain animation exploits no longer work with the new system.
Free movement is already possible
What have players found out so far? Players have discovered on reddit that it is already possible to activate “Free Movement” in New World.
This is “really cool”; the character would no longer slowly walk backwards when you move it backwards, but would actually run towards the camera. This feels very fluid.
You can read how to activate this on the live servers on reddit.
This is what lies behind it: The fact that the combat feels tough and laggy when there are many players in one zone is a problem with these “action MMORPGs”, which The Elder Scrolls Online has also suffered from for a long time. Certain tricks with “animation cancellations” that give experienced PvP players an unfair advantage are also known from MMORPGs.
This completely kills the tension of big battles when the fight no longer feels so snappy and you have the feeling of losing control of your character.
We will be able to see the actual effects of the system from mid-March.
