When colon cancer was not yet part of the population screening, tumors that were discovered were often at a bad stage. Less than 20 percent were in the “most favorable phase”, stage 1. Since the large-scale checks, this has risen to more than 30 percent. The number of discovered cases of intestinal tumors in the “worst phase”, stage 4, actually fell from more than a quarter to more than 15 percent. In that phase, the cancer has spread and the patient can no longer be cured.
