Colombia stops migrant flights after US stricter migration policy – Trump threatens tariffs

Colombia’s President Gustavo Petro says that flights from the United States with migrants to be brought to Colombia will not be allowed to fly into the country’s airspace.

US President Donald Trump responds with threatening trade tariffs.

Petro’s play comes after Trump’s statements about stricter migration policy.

“The United States cannot treat Colombian migrants as criminals. I prohibit American planes that have Colombian migrants on board to enter our airspace,” Petro writes at X.

He also claims that he has already forced US military planes with Colombian migrants, without further detail.

Later on Sunday, a few hours after the Colombian president’s play, Trump replies. He threatens Colombia with sanctions and tariffs.

Ordered the government to “take revenge measures”

“Petro’s stopping of these flights jeopardizes US national security and puts the public in danger,” Trump writes on his platform Truth Social. He further states that he ordered the US government to take revenge measures.

The criminal measures include, among other things, trade tariffs, travel bans for Colombian government officials.

Petro’s play came the day after Brazil’s government expressed similar dissatisfaction. The criticism specifically concerned how the United States dealt with a number of migrants brought to Brazil. Travelers were forced to wear handcuffs, which was a “flagrant breach” of fundamental rights, according to the Brazilian government.

In another post on X Saws Petro Trump along the ankles.

He writes, among other things, that he “does not shake hands with white slave advocates”.
