Collectible figures worth $30 million must die

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

On March 1, 2023, the company behind Funko Pop issued a press release suggesting that heaps of collectible figures would end up in the trash. Two Reddit users suggest that stock is actually being destroyed and disposed of.

Why should the Funkos be disposed of? The company behind the collectible figurines has too much stock, as stated on the official website. Therefore, write-downs of 30 to 36 million dollars will be made – presumably by disposing of numerous collectible figures.

Two Reddit users show what fate awaits the characters

Reddit user u/edelwiess20 posted a video showing Funko packaging at a landfill site on February 28th:

According to the user, the figurines were located in a landfill in Washington. All the packages are still sealed packaging. They contained Funkoverse Game products from Nightmare before Christmas, Aggretsuko, Harry Potter and Jurassic Park.

Speaking to Kotaku, the Reddit user, who was traveling with a friend, said he happened to be in the right place at the right time to capture the sad sight of the discarded supplies. The reason why he shared the video publicly was given by edelwiess20:

“Our main reason for releasing this video is to show the waste and greed of companies at the expense of consumers.”

Also, reddit user u/Eldarthosx posted a photo of a truck with a pallet of Funko packages and wrote, “Funko have been shredding and destroying pops truck by truck for weeks.”

According to Kotaku, he is a Funko employee who tells the gaming site: The figures would end up in huge shredders. What is left is either recycled or thrown away.

There has not yet been an official statement from Funko on this.

In fact, it seems cheaper for the company to destroy existing stock than to keep it in inventory and sell it at discounted prices.
