The largest remaining bridge span of the collapsed Giant Bridge in Baltimore, USA has been blown free to free the stricken container ship Dali.

A series of controlled explosions on Monday broke up parts of the structure leaning against the ship, which on March 26 rammed straight into a bridge foundation, causing the bridge to collapse.

Six people working on the bridge at the time died.

The cargo ship Dali was chartered by Danish shipping giant Mærsk for a planned voyage from Baltimore to Sri Lanka, but did not make it that far.

The crew on board, 21 sailors, have not been allowed to leave the ship since the accident. In the meantime, they have worked with maintenance and assisted investigators who are trying to determine the circumstances surrounding the accident.
