An annual walk to benefit those in need in Chatham-Kent raised more than $70,000 on Saturday, beating its original goal by $10,000.
NeighbourLink Chatham-Kent hosted the local Coldest Night of the Year walk, which saw more than 180 people come out for the cause.
“We’re very happy because we exceeded the goal,” organizer Al Baker said. “We can certainly use it.”
With the former St. Agnes school serving as the meeting point, participants could either walk a two-kilometre or five-kilometre route.
Baker said the funds will go towards general expenses. NeighbourLink offers free services, including but not limited to food delivery and transportation to medical appointments.
However, the organization doesn’t receive any other funding outside of its fundraising efforts.
It’s the seventh year the event has been held locally. Similar Coldest Night of the Year walks also took place throughout Canada this weekend.
Baker said many regular participants come out each year.
“It’s become a thing,” he said. “People like to get out and walk in the wintertime. Especially on a nice day like this and supporting this cause.”
