CoD MW 3: The campaign failed with the players

The shooter Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 had its big release on November 10, 2023. After the campaign was already playable in advance, the zombie and multiplayer modes also went online. What does the community say after the game’s full release?

Before the shooter’s big release, players were already able to form an opinion about the CoD MW3 campaign.

However, many in the community were just disappointed. The reasons for this were, among other things, a poor plot and the short running time of the campaign.

The full game has been available since November 10, 2023. But what is the mood now after the big release?

The community is still disappointed

Even after the zombie and multiplayer modes were added to the game, the mood in the community is mostly negative.

On Steam, for example, CoD MW3 still performs largely negatively with 2,085 reviews, of which just 31% are positive (as of November 11, 2023)

In the comments on Steam, the campaign remains the main point of criticism from players. CoD MW3 is simply too expensive, while the new game content feels more like DLC instead of its own game.

The multiplayer mode in the game currently seems to be a little better received by players than the campaign. Some users on Steam say that they like the multiplayer – but even then the overall price is not justified.

Because: The multiplayer offers little that is new and feels a bit like rehashed game content from Modern Warfare 2. Players on reddit also say similar things.

Here we have collected some player opinions about multiplayer:

  • “Earthquake” via Steam: “Don’t get me wrong. The multiplayer is fantastic. BUT the campaign was bad. Parts of the story didn’t make sense, it felt like I was playing DMZ most of the time (even though I really liked DMZ, I didn’t want it as a campaign). […] The only reason I’m not refunding it is because I really like the multiplayer. Why is the game $70?!”
  • u/CMDR_Soup via reddit: “Here’s my review: The multiplayer is fun, but it should have been a free update. The campaign sucks.”
  • Molested_Donut via Steam: This is MW 2 Remastered: “Simply copy multiplayer. MW 2 multiplayer with new weapons and that’s it. How can you call it MW 3 and pay € for it! They make the same game every year and we buy it, so sad…”
  • Overall, the multiplayer seems to perform better than the campaign. However, it is not enough for players to see the price as justified and the mood around the new CoD MW 3 is still rather negative – even after the full release.

Industry insider Jason Schreier spoke to Sledgehammer Games employees and shows what went wrong in the development of CoD MW 3.

Too short a development time and crunch are said to be to blame for the inadequate campaign:
