CoD Modern Warfare 2’s new Gunsmith is somewhat Pay2Win, but reduces the level grind significantly

Last minute The world stood up after Putins decision in

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 has introduced the “Weapon Smith 2.0” and presents interesting changes on the one hand, while on the other hand it is based on the system of CoD MW 2019. MeinMMO introduces you to the new gunsmith and explains why there is also a pinch of Pay2Win in it.

Call of Duty’s Gunsmith allows you to customize your weapons with unlocked attachments to suit your playstyle. The system is very popular, but it also separates the casual gamer from the hardcore grinder.

Because the essays have to be unlocked in a long level process. This can take many hours and in that time you have to use a weapon that has not yet reached its full potential – the important and powerful attachments often only come at a high level.

Frequent players have the attachments quickly, casuals then run around with the “weak” weapon for a week until they reach the max level. In Modern Warfare 2, that changes a bit.

The new “Waffenschmied 2.0” supports attachments that can be screwed onto multiple weapons without further leveling. In addition, new “Vault Blueprints” can be bought, which make leveling a weapon almost completely superfluous. We explain the new weaponsmith in detail.

We embed the English video for Waffenschmied 2.0 here:

CoD MW2: Armorer 2.0 – “Families” share attachments

How does the new Weaponsmith work? There are no more weapon levels, everything is now done via the so-called “receivers”. They form a kind of weapon family, which consists of several receivers and can use their attachments with each other. Many new weapons are also unlocked via the receiver.

There are 9 attachment slots in total and you can activate 5 attachments at a time. Modern Warfare 2 takes over the number of attachments from CoD MW 2019 again. In the current CoD Vanguard, 10 attachments can be mounted on a weapon.

However, the receiver is not one of the 5 possible attachments – it has its own slot.

The attachments of the first receiver can be screwed directly onto the new weapons that you have unlocked within the receiver family. This works even if the new weapon receiver is still level 0. This gives you a decent amount of attachments to customize when unlocking the weapon / weapon receiver.

There should also be attachments that you can use directly for all weapons in the game. Unlock once and use for the whole arsenal.

In the example video you activate the M16 receiver via the receiver of the M4. The M16 can then use the attachments that you have unlocked via the M4 receiver. The M4 receiver itself can also be used with the M16, which in turn gives the weapon new properties.

Within the receiver families there are then strong possibilities for adjustments. The M4 and M16 assault rifles share receivers with submachine guns. You can use these with the assault rifles and create a hybrid weapon.

You unlock new receivers and receiver families via your account levels. But instead of unlocking all release weapons via the account as before, you get a receiver that can be used to unlock several weapons.

All of this can already be tested in the beta, which starts on September 16:

Summary of CoD Weaponsmith 2.0:

  • There are no more weapon levels, only receiver levels
  • You unlock receivers via your account level
  • Each weapon has a receiver
  • Each receiver is part of a weapon family
  • The families share all essays
  • You unlock new weapons within a family via the receiver level
  • Hybrid weapons are possible if, for example, an MP receiver is present in an assault weapon family
  • The system means you have to grind fewer weapons overall. Instead of just going up 70 levels with the M4 for all attachments, you level up weapon families at the same time and end up with about five finished weapons and not just one.

The disadvantage may be that you have to play weapons that you don’t feel like playing. Because to unlock all attachments of a weapon family, you also have to play all receivers. In order to get all the attachments of the M4, points with a submachine gun receiver are then also necessary.

CoD MW2: Vault weapons are logical step, but somewhat Pay2Win

What’s up with the vault weapons? Another big innovation are “Vault Blueprints”. These are weapon skins that push cosmetics for all attachments into your inventory in one fell swoop.

Part of the €100 “Vault Edition” of CoD MW2, the FJX Cinder Weapon Vault is the first skin pack of its kind (€110 for consoles). The package will already be available in beta.

A look at the preview image reveals that the receivers of a weapon family are also part of the vault packages. If you have a vault package, you have all the attachments for five weapons right away and you don’t need to level up anymore.

The advantages: In the past, many weapon blueprints were partly useless because they only looked good if you also had the appropriate attachments on the weapon with the right look.

However, if you wanted to use the strongest weapon attachments, it was extremely rare that you could use your entire favorite skin. If there are now packages where each attachment fits the set, the problem disappears.

It also suits players who have little time to gamble. You quickly buy a package with all attachments and possibly have an assault rifle and a submachine gun with all attachments.

DrDisrespect explains why Activision Blizzard no longer wants him as a partner for CoD: “Same people as on Twitch”

The disadvantages: A breath of Pay2Win blows through the gunsmith. Because blueprints used to only contain very specific attachments that were rarely “meta”, you can now buy an entire weapon outright.

The current Battle Pass discussion about Overwatch 2 shows how critical some players see such “temporal” advantages. You can’t buy any damage advantages or the like, but you can start with a clear advantage if, for example, the new weapon of a season is too strong.

While the others are still leveling up their receivers, you’re already hunting at the highest level with the new best weapon.
