Co-op shooter Redfall sounds like Left 4 Dead with vampires – but the boss says it should be completely different

In an interview, the developers of the upcoming co-op shooter Redfall revealed that the title should be like a popular open-world game.

What game is it?

  • Redfall is a co-op shooter in which you have to prove yourself as a vampire hunter in the eponymous city and will be released on Xbox Series X|S and PC.
  • You choose one of the playable characters, all of whom have different backgrounds and characteristics, and fight vampires with up to 4 players.
  • The co-op shooter was originally scheduled for release in summer 2022, but was postponed along with Starfield. The new release is now planned for the first half of 2023.
  • Redfall shows its darker side in the trailer

What does the boss of Redfall say? In an interview with the online magazine GamesRadar, creative director Ricardo Bare and studio director Harvey Smith from the development studio Arkane talk about Redfall.

Bare compares it to horde shooters like Left 4 Dead and says Redfall isn’t one of those games. However, he could understand that there was this assumption. Finally, in Redfall there are four playable characters, co-op and the goal of fighting the undead.

Still, the way you experience Redfall is different, Bare explains, comparing it to the popular Far Cry franchise.

[…] In terms of the way you play and experience Redfall, it’s nothing like those games at all. Redfall is more like stepping into Far Cry.

Redfall is a “lousy tourist town in New England”

Comparison to Far Cry: Unlike Far Cry, however, Redfall does not rely on tropical landscapes, deserted islands or dense forests. With Redfall, the studio wants to create a map that looks familiar, says Studio Director Harvey Smith, describing the eponymous city of the co-op shooter as a “lousy tourist town in New England”.

Ricardo Bare adds that Redfall’s pace is slower because the title is played on foot and there are no vehicles. This should not only affect the speed of the game, but also the atmosphere when exploring the map:

We want you to sneak through a corn field in the fog at night and hear vampires whispering in the dark. You might see a farmhouse in the distance and sneak into it, only to find it full of cultists and a few trapped survivors that you can rescue. That’s the kind of vibe Redfall exudes.

Bare also explains that Redfall’s open world is “big as hell” and that you can just go and immerse yourself in the world.

Time of day dependent spawns: Another important part of the atmosphere is the day-night cycle, which, according to Harvey Smith, should radically change the feel of the game: “You can start a mission at lunchtime and get distracted on the way there. By the time you reach the objective, it may be night and the enemies will spawn differently.”

In general, encounters with hostile NPCs in Redfall seem to be something very special, because it should also happen that the NPCs are at war with each other.
