With 3 Body Problem, the Game of Thrones duo David Benioff and DB Weiss have been working on the Chinese since this year Trisolaris trilogy by sci-fi author Liu Cixin to adapt for Netflix. Season 1 covers a little more than the first book and revealed that not ice zombies, but highly developed aliens from a difficult to survive solar system are on the long journey to Earth to take our planet as a new home. Unheard of!
Series fans know very little about the so-called Trisolans aka San-Ti. But even book experts don’t have the complete picture, because many detailed questions remain unanswered even within the three-part novel series. However, there is a fourth book called Ambassadors from the Stars that began as fan fiction and was later officially approved by the original author. This is where the main thing is reveals a crazy detail about the alienswhich there are even references to in Season 1 of the Netflix series… if you want to interpret them as such.
The truth about the aliens from 3 Body Problem
If you haven’t figured it out on your own while watching the season, maybe the penny will drop when we show you the clues in detail again:
Note 1: In the VR simulation, players experience how three suns with unpredictable orbits make life in the homeland of the San-Ti extremely difficult. So they have to keep dehydrated and wait for a less hostile era in order to survive.
Note 2: Like the Borg from Star Trek, the San-Ti are a collective hive intelligence in which there are no secrets between each other. They fear direct conflict with humans and see enough potential in us to want to slow down our progress in the 400 years until their invasion.
Note 3: Psychological projection exists.

Evaluation and resolution (potential spoiler): The fourth book reveals that the dangerous Trisolans are individually no larger than a grain of rice and travel in matchbox-sized spaceships. Like terrestrial tardigrades, this is the only reason they can successfully dehydrate and rehydrate themselves, but with such small brains they would not be able to develop individually complex intelligence. That’s why they rely on the intelligence of the collective.
Your threatening message “You are vermin!” It almost seems like the unsettled projection of small creatures dealing with human flesh giants. Of course, the size difference won’t help us if the Trilsolans’ technology remains so superior to ours for the next 400 years.
Why this twist probably won’t make it into the Netflix series
It is extremely doubtful that this twist will even appear in the Netflix series. After all, the showrunners (presumably) don’t even have the rights to Baoshu’s supplemental novel. And even if it were, Benioff and Weiss are making a sci-fi series for a large mainstream audience for whom Tiny Aliens would probably be a hard pill to swallow. That’s what the makers of the film Star Trek Beyond thought, in which a similar revelation is merely played out as a joke scene.
When will 3 Body Problem continue?
To date, Netflix hasn’t even approved a second season. If anything, that is No new consequences are expected before 2025. If all else fails and the series is canceled early, you can still switch to the Chinese adaptation Three-Body, which can be streamed in its entirety on Viki.
