Since the year 2000, the consumption of clothing and textiles, i.e. the net inflow of new textiles per person to Sweden, has increased by 40 percent, according to figures from the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency that Sweden’s Radio Ekot has seen.
The increase has occurred at the same time as knowledge has increased that the manufacture of clothing is problematic for the environment and the climate.
– The trend continued upwards and last year we consumed 15.2 kilos per person per year, says Yvonne Augustsson, who is an expert in textiles at the Environmental Protection Agency, to Ekot.
Manufacturing of clothes and shoes accounts for an estimated ten percent of global emissions of greenhouse gases. (TT)
