Close to a hundred civilians, including women and children, were killed in a massacre in the village of Zaongo in eastern Burkina Faso earlier this month, the EU’s foreign affairs agency EEAS writes in a statement, which also calls for an investigation.

“The EU calls on the transitional authorities to shed light on the circumstances surrounding this murder in order to establish responsibility,” writes the EEAS in the statement.

Burkina Faso has for years fought a jihadist insurgency with links to the terrorist movements al-Qaeda and IS. Thousands of people have been killed and over two million have been displaced within the country.

It is unclear who carried out the attacks in Zaongo.
